The book True North Bill George, written by Bill George in 2007, serves as a guide to discovering the inner compass and staying true to oneself while developing the skills needed to be authentic leaders. The true north is your fixed point in a revolving world that helps you stay on track as a leader. As a compass points to the magnetic pole, the true north indicates your leadership proposal. When you follow it, your leadership will be authentic, and people will naturally relate to you. However, discovering it takes a lifetime of commitment and learning. But as long as you are faithful to who you are, you can deal with the most difficult circumstances that life presents.
As shown in the book "Discover Your True North," what emerges from the uniqueness of these life stories is that many leaders find their passion for leading. not because they were born leaders or because they believed they had the characteristics, traits, or style of a leader. But because they see themselves as people who want to make a difference and inspire others to join them in pursuit of common goals, Furthermore, many people see themselves as victims, feeling as if the world doesn't give them a choice. However, for the author Bill George, reevaluating our stories allows us to recognize that we are not victims, but people shaped by experiences that provide the impetus for us to become leaders.
As a result, the book then discusses a variety of topics that piqued my interest. One such lesson was about discovering yourself and becoming an authentic leader. Finding your personality and applying it to become a great leader is thus one of the book's most important lessons. To discover our authentic leadership, we must put our principles and beliefs to the test in real-world situations. But, because there is no map or straight path between where you are now and where you want to go, you need a compass to stay focused on your True North and get back on track if you wander off course. Schultz, the founder of Starbucks, is a prime example. When his father lost his job, the whole family also lost their healthcare benefits. Schultz's mother was pregnant at the time, and since then, the family has had to live a life of hiding from creditors the money his father borrowed to support his wife's pregnancy. Schultz swore to himself that he would change this if given the chance. Finally, Starbucks became the first business to offer health care rights to part-timers, as long as they work at least 20 hours a week. Arguably, the childhood story became the key to Schultz becoming a true leader.
Furthermore, events, with a skilled leader, can also provide the groundwork for their lives, creating a motivator for them to decide to change the times. Reatha Clark King, former president of the General Mills Foundation, is a good example. Despite living in poverty and facing discrimination, Reatha, a woman of color, was able to secure a scholarship and eventually get a Ph.D. in Thermochemistry. Her greatest aim is to provide greater possibilities for the disadvantaged and to assist them in overcoming discrimination based on skin color and gender. That source of drive sprang from her years of poverty; her ego was always wanting to help individuals in similar situations to her. Hence, Once you have a clear awareness of who you are, you must understand your values and the principles that guide your leadership.
Additionally, I learned that giving strength and courage to others is a job for leaders. Leadership is not about compelling others to do what you want, but rather about inspiring others to realize their greatest potential. We cadets as future leaders, on the other hand, frequently require a very meaningful and memorable experience to comprehend this truth. Most genuine leaders have had life-changing experiences similar to the stories written in the book. Only then did they fully comprehend their mission. To conclude, the book True North by Bill George gives me a rare insight and analysis of the different approaches and guidelines of authentic leaders in the pursuit of understanding values and ourselves. By discovering different sides of ourselves, we will find our own "guidelines" to stay on track.
